Welcome to the Whole Earth Montessori School

The Whole Earth Montessori School was founded in 1986 for the purpose of providing opportunity for children to maximize their potential by providing an environment in which each child can grow in his or her own time and way while learning respect for self, others and the environment all people share.

In 1990 the school moved to a beautiful two and a half acre campus with a stream and woodland area for nature studies. In 1992 the one hundred year old barn on the school property was remodeled into an additional classroom. Currently, the school has two preschool/kindergarten classrooms, one lower elementary classroom, and one upper elementary classroom, accommodating children up to the sixth grade.

In January 2005, the upper level of the barn opened.  It provides space for music, tai chi, yoga, art, craft and cooking classes for elementary students. The space also serves as a resource center and gathering place for parents.

Goals

Believing that children are the most valuable natural resource on Earth in that they hold within themselves a potential new beginning for humanity, the following goals have been established for our students:

bullet

Develop a respect for self as a unique individual having a vital role to play in the overall scheme of life on Earth.

bullet

Develop a respect for others and an appreciation for the similarities as well as the differences that exist among the people of the world.

bullet

Develop a respect for the environment all people share and an awareness of the need to preserve and protect it for all living things.

bullet

Nurture the basic, universal human values of truth, right action, peace, love, and non-violence.

bullet

Nurture an awareness that self, other, and the environment are connected and in so doing lead each child to realize...

"that every act of carelessness, selfishness, indifference, hatred and violence toward nature or toward other human beings is actually an act against ourselves, our families and our culture. Therefore, we are summoned to the highest of human virtues, such as love, caring, generosity, responsibility for our actions, forgiveness, compassion and openness to one another. It leads to sharing rather than accumulating, to cooperation rather than competition and to peace rather than violence."     Aline Wolf

Objectives for achieving these goals utilize the philosophy, methods, and materials advocated by Dr. Maria Montessori.

Philosophy

The Montessori philosophy is a philosophy by which individuals develop and educate themselves toward their unknown potential in a way that is in harmony with their own nature. It is a philosophy by which individuals develop a complementary social structure which recognizes the needs of the individual as well as the needs of the group. It is a philosophy which considers children the greatest hope for the future.
